Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships

The TIFO Fellowship program aims at enabling Ph.D. candidates to pursue research in Japan for their ongoing Ph.D. projects. The fellowship provides funding for a research stay of two to three months. Successful candidates will receive a 7,000 EUR fellowship to cover travel, accommodation, and other research-related expenses.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be doctoral students both at the time of application and at the time of their research stay in Japan.
  • Applicants must be pursuing a Ph.D. in Japanese Studies at a European institution.
  • Postdoctoral researchers are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be working on their first Ph.D. degree.
  • Applicants who have spent more than two years in Japan will not be considered. As this fellowship aims to support those with limited prior experience in Japan, applications from Japanese high school graduates are not eligible.

Application and Selection Process: The EAJS manages the submission process via an online portal. Your application must include:

  1. Curriculum Vitae.
  2. A brief outline (max 500 words) of the Ph.D. project for which the research in Japan is proposed.

These documents should be submitted via the application portal.

  1. A letter of support from your supervisor or advisor, to be sent separately to the EAJS office. The letter must be printed on university letterhead, signed by the advisor, and sent by post or email as a PDF.

The Toshiba International Foundation has asked the EAJS to administer these fellowships. The selection process and final decisions will be made by the EAJS Council.
