Workshop Outline

The European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) invites applications for the 4th EAJS Publication Workshop to be held at Freie Universitaet Berlin, 9–11 October 2024.

The workshop will offer young scholars in the field of Japanese Studies and related disciplines an opportunity to discuss their publication projects with experienced researchers and editors from renowned English-language peer-reviewed journals. Participants can expect to receive advice about how to find the right journal to publish their work, how to write letters to the editor in the submission process, and how to address critical issues raised in the review process.

The EAJS will cover travel costs to Berlin (up to 450 EUR) and accommodation for the duration of the workshop for a group of up to 10 early career scholars in the field of Japanese studies.

Eligibility

Application is open to advanced PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers working on a research topic related to Japan, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled or work at European universities, and to European nationals who are enrolled in graduate programs or work at universities outside of Europe. Furthermore, candidates who have completed their PhD at a European university within the last three years may apply.

The EAJS will select up to 10 participants based on the academic quality of the proposed articles. Everybody is most welcome to apply, but a certain preference will be given to scholars with non-English-speaking backgrounds. PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers from European universities that do not have major centres of Japanese Studies are especially encouraged to apply.

Application and Selection Process

To apply, please complete the online application form. The application period will close on 26 July 2024.

In the first instance your application should include:

  • A curriculum vitae;
  • A short cover letter (maximum 250 words), indicating why you wish to attend the workshop;
  • An article abstract (about 500 words).

Successful candidates will be required to submit a full-length article manuscript (8,000-10,000 words including references) to the EAJS office by 13 September 2024.

After the workshop, all participants will be asked to submit a short report on their participation by 8 November 2024. These reports will be published on the EAJS website and in the EAJS Bulletin.

Participation and related funding will be contingent on the timely submission of all requested documents.

Successful applicants also have to be members of the European Association for Japanese Studies by the time of the workshop.
